The Niphal is the “passive” of the Qal: “he was seen” as against “he saw”.
It sometimes expresses a reflexive action instead (“he guarded himself”), and several verbs in the Niphal have a simple active sense in English — “he fought”, “he remained”, “he swore”, “he entered”.
This form accounts for 6.0% of the verbs parsed.
